Mr. Johnson is a successful business entrepreneur, having served in government,
corporate America and private business in his career. He is currently the President &
CEO of his firm, The Bernard Johnson Group, Inc., a nationally known Land Acquisition,
Right of Way Negotiation and Relocation Services firm, headquartered in San Diego, CA;
and serves as the Principal Managing Broker of National Land Realty, LLC, a national
land brokerage firm, headquartered in Greenville, SC., doing business in over 42 States
Mr. Johnson holds a real estate Broker’s license in several states. Mr. Johnsons’ general
real estate, land use planning, real estate development and redevelopment expertise
spans over 30 plus years with experience in community & economic development, real
estate development, redevelopment, and negotiation of commercial retail, light
industrial, transportation, utility, and general commercial real estate transactions for
private and public entities and agencies. Mr. Johnson is a graduate of Michigan State
University, with a BA in Urban Policy and Public Administration, a graduate of National
University, with MBA in Business Administration and Finance.
Other Professional accreditations includes certifications from the International Right of
Way Association include: Senior Right-of-Way Agent (SRWA), as well as three additional
professional certifications: R/W-Negotiations, R/W-Asset & Property Management, and
R/W-Relocations. He is currently a member of the local & state chapters, as well as the
international organization, and as a member of the international organization is involved
in minority business mentoring, educational and instructional course activities.
Mr. Johnson’s experience in these areas requires working with private developers and
government agencies, assembling teams of specialty consultants, and bringing together
community business organizations and community planning groups to implement new
commercial retail and light industry businesses, the Utility (oil and Gas/pipeline) and
alternative energy Industry, as well as the Transportation industry.
As a Director and board member of the Caltrans Small Business Council, (SBC), Member
of the High Speed Rail Authority Business Advisory Council (HSR BAC), Mr. Johnson
encourages the participation of small businesses with Caltrans, HSR and other
state/local agencies, and participates in the forum for small business trade
associations, providing feedback on policies and practices that affect or impact small
business utilization / participation in Caltrans contracted projects. In keeping with the
directive and purpose of the counsel, Mr. Johnson provides comment and guidance to
the Small Businesses, as well as mentoring other small DBE firms throughout the State.
Mr. Johnson has continually focused on assisting small and medium size businesses
achieve their start-up and expansion goals, be it finding the right initial location, to the
actual building of their businesses, or attracting the appropriate businesses to
underdeveloped and/or historically blighted areas, facilitating resource access & growth,
and subsequently enhancing business development opportunities; ultimately this
activity provides significant regional job growth. Supporting entrepreneurial
opportunities within the community is a worthy goal that benefits all aspects and levels
of the civic community. Mr. Johnson’s experience in helping to establish small business
“incubators” working with various government agencies, as well as participation in many
other public and private sector small business councils to advocate for SBE, WBE, DBE
& DVBE inclusion within community planning is in my opinion an essential obligation for
any public service organization and/or government administrator.
Mr. Johnson has served the Association and Non-profit Boards, he is currently the Chair
and Board Member of the Capital Black Chamber of Commerce Foundation(CAPBCCF),
serves as an Advisory Board Member of the Southern California Black Chamber of
Commerce (SCBCC), a former Board Member of the California Black Chamber of
Commerce (CBCC), a Co-Founder and former, Executive Board Member and Secretary of
the California African American Chamber of Commerce (CAACC) and serves as Vice Chair
of the California African American Action Fund, a former Board Member of the San Diego
Association of Realtors (SDAR), and a former member of the Sempra Energy Political
Action Committee (PAC), a former Member of the San Diego Regional Chamber of
Commerce (SDRCC), serving on the Transportation and Energy committees
